Scrubby Rise Shiraz Cabernet Petit Verdot 2008, South Australia

RRP £10.99
1x75cl £6.99 - Save £4
6x75cl £41.94
This hugely satisfying red is made of near equal amounts of Shiraz and Cabernet with 15% Petit Verdot which adds colour and fragrance and takes the wine to another level. Although just classed as South Australia, the fruit is sourced from McLaren Vale (60%) and Fleurieu Peninsula (40%) and has had 12 months in American and French oak.

It's highly rated by many wine critics, being listed by Matthew Jukes in his 100 Best Australian Wines and receiving this accolade from Campbell Mattinson of Winefront, which we think says it all: "This is a stirring return to form. Of course it’s more than just shiraz - it’s part cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot too. Fantastically affordable red to strap your lips around. Full of jammy, blackberried flavour but it’s the dusty, earthen, spicy notes that really send the Slurpability Score soaring. There’s a modest amount of tannin grip and a sweet, Turkish delight-like flavour rippling through the aftertaste. A bonza red...." 14.5% vol.

Beringer Stone Cellars Merlot 2004, California

RRP £7.49
1x75cl £3.99 - Save £3.50
6x75cl £23.94
This outstanding bargain was part of a mixed parcel of stock which we picked up at a knock down price due to the age of the wines. After careful selection, we were left with some gems at give away prices.

This is an older vintage but experience has taught us that Beringer wines age extremely well and thankfully this is no exception. It has lots of lovely ripe and soft red fruits which mingle with a little spice, giving a wonderfully silky mouth-feel. A decent all-rounder that is good on its own or with lightly flavoured meat dishes. 13% vol.

Franz Haas Pinot Bianco 2006, Alto Adige, Italy

RRP £13.99
1x75cl £6.99 - Half Price
6x75cl £41.94
The Haas family has been growing grapes in Montagna in the province of Bolzano, Alto Adige for generations. It is only with Franz, however, the current proprietor, that they have begun to produce and bottle wines of real quality. Franz Haas goes to tremendous lengths to grow good grapes, and then strives to preserve the flavours of the fruit during winemaking. As a result the wines that he produces are infused with great character, and show a rare purity and balance on the palate.

The use of 30% new oak during fermentation adds a little direction to a wine that is surprisingly flavoursome. Greenish gold in colour with perfumes of freshly-baked bread, dried wild flowers and a hint of almonds. On the palate it is full-bodied with some fresh acidity balancing out the rich fruit notes and a spicy edge to the finish. The wine pairs very well with dishes such as pasta, risotto and fish, with or without sauce, up to light Asian dishes or curries. 13% vol.

Scrubby Rise Unwooded Chardonnay 2009, South Australia

RRP £10.99
1x75cl £6.99 - Save £4
6x75cl £41.94
Another clean and pure Chardonnay that the critics enjoyed..... "Light and fresh with a mix of citrus, nectarine and what might best be described as an orange oil character - something a bit fragrant and exotic anyway. It looks pretty dry with decent focus and even flickers of minerality. A bit tart and green edged perhaps, but vinous and flavoursome for a wine at this price point. Finish is good and dry too. Looked better, and more convincing, as it warmed in the glass - and that's a very good sign." - Gary Walsh, Winefront.

"A lighter and leaner style of unwooded chardie - if you like, it's almost in the leaner austere NZ sauv blanc style. Plenty of intensity and length on the palate. Fine gentle acid. Easy current drinking." Ray Jordan, West Australian. 12% vol.

Flat Roof Manor Semillon 2006, Stellenbosch, South Africa

RRP £8.99
1x75cl £5.99 - Save £3
6x75cl £35.94
Made at the Uitkyk Winery in tiny quantities by Estelle Lourens - formerly of Tatachilla in Australia, Simi in California and then neighbouring Neethlingshof in Stellenbosch. The Flat Roof Manor range were awarded "Best Value 2008" by the Wine Magazine Best Value Wine Guide.

This is very impressive Semillon that contains 15% Sauvignon and gains breadth from 5 months lees ageing along with some barrel ageing. There's gooseberry and cut grass aromas with a touch of lemon and allspice. Ageing on yeast lees have given some additional complexity to the melon, lanolin, citrus and leafy flavours. It has a nice long, clean finish and will stand up to curries. 13.5% vol.
